Food microbiology is an applied science and the important application of Food microbiologist is to help assure food processing and provide safe food to the consumer. One of the main intention of including Food and Industrial Microbiology as a department in food technology is to create the awareness of need of safe food supply, awareness of hygiene and sanitation in food processing and to study the production of various fermented foods by using different micro-organism.
Food biotechnology includes genetically modification, Recombinant DNA technology which is an additional method to improve quality of existing farmlands and to improve the quality of food supply. GM foods promise to meet this need in a number of ways like Pest resistance, Herbicide tolerance, Disease resistance Phytoremediation, Cold tolerance, Drought tolerance/salinity tolerance plants. The food processing using biotechnology provides a wide variety of fermented foods and food ingredients that are extensively used. This department is important in the sense of increasing food Quality in terms of sanitation, nutrition and also hygiene.
